Today’s, Modern Shetland Ponies combine the beauty and hardiness of the more traditional Shetland with the excitement and animation of a Hackney pony. The result is simply elegance in motion. This sophisticated pony with its extreme action, superb carriage and spirited personality is truly at home in the show ring. Modern Shetland Ponies excel in performance classes including roadster, fine harness and pleasure driving.

Thrilling, animated Moderns offer something for anyone moved by society ponies.

Beautiful Pony With Long History

The Classic American Shetland and the Foundation Classic…

These final two American Shetland divisions represent the history, tradition and beauty of the American Shetland Saga.

Foundation American Shetland Ponies have a name that actually defines them; they represent the foundation from which today’s American Shetland Ponies sprang.  These are beautiful yet hardy animals that most closely resemble the Shetlands of the mid-20th century.  Foundation Shetlands may be somewhat more refined than their imported ancestors, but they are still the most conservative of the American Shetland divisions. A Foundation Shetland should have a well-balanced, strong, sturdy body in a compact package with an excellent topline, high tail-set and well-sprung ribs.

The American Shetland Pony

Today’s beautiful and versatile American Shetland Pony is not the Shetland that many might remember from childhood. Today’s American Shetland is truly a unique breed that offers something for everyone.

Shetlands were first imported into the United States in the 1800s. Since that time, American breeders have worked to refine Shetlands here in the states. The journey to improve the quality of stock by selectively breeding has been governed by the American Shetland Pony Club, Inc. The ASPC was established in 1888, making it one of the oldest equine registries around.

Today’s American Shetland and all its divisions are a testament to the vision of those early pony lovers. Those are the folks who sought to create beautiful, elegant and well-made ponies that could also thrill with their performance and animation.

Today’s American Shetlands come in one of four pleasing forms: Modern, Modern Pleasure, Classic and Foundation.

Well-packaged pizzaz

Modern Pleasure American Shetland…

The American Shetland Pony Club’s Modern Pleasure Division combines the style and traditions of the exciting Modern with an easier approach to showing and an emphasis on manners and behavior.

A Modern Pleasure Shetland might be just the pony for those interested in the style and pizzazz of a Modern but who are intimidated by the care, training and shoeing required for those ponies. A Modern Pleasure Pony should be pretty, well-balanced and animated with an emphasis on excellent manners.

Modern Pleasure ponies are well suited to amateurs and youth or other non-professional handlers. Or, these ponies offer a good starting point for individuals who might want to get started with flashy but fiery Moderns.
