WPCSA Expands High Score Awards at 2012 Pony Finals

on Tuesday, 10 July 2012. Posted in Other Pony

Press Release from the Welsh Pony & Cob Society of America

The successful High Score Awards presented by the Welsh Pony & Cob Society of America at Pony Finals have been expanded this year to include registered part bred Welsh ponies in addition to registered purebred and half Welsh ponies recognized in past years.  Earlier this year, WPCSA voted to register part bred Welsh and these animals are now competing at rated Welsh shows alongside half Welsh.  Part bred Welsh are animals with at least one registered half Welsh parent.

In addition to including registered part bred Welsh, the awards have been restructured in the Regular Pony Divisions so that the top four highest scoring registered Welsh (purebred, half or part bred) in each height division (small, medium, and large) will be recognized with neck sashes.  These ribbons will be handed out as the awards are given for each height section.

In the Green Pony Division, one set of high score awards will be presented to the overall top four highest scoring registered Welsh ponies, including purebred, half or part bred.  Small, medium, and large ponies will compete against each other for these awards in the Green Pony Division.  The top scoring green pony will also receive a halter compliments of Just for Ponies, a keeper trophy and a cash stipend for the rider.

At the conclusion of the regular pony hunter competition and from the pool of the winners in each height division for the regulars, the Highest Scoring Registered Purebred and the Highest Scoring Registered Half Welsh/Part Bred Welsh will be announced and awarded with an additional neck sash, a halter compliments of Just for Ponies, a keeper trophy, and a cash stipend for the rider.

The change in award presentations for the regular pony divisions was necessitated by the growth of Pony Finals and the logistics involved with such large entries in the divisions.  "Because Pony Finals has grown so much over the last several years, it has become increasingly difficult to get the award winners all together at the final award ceremony,” explains Dr. Ruth Wilburn, WPCSA President and organizer of the awards.  “A change was needed in order to fully recognize how proud the WPCSA is of these ponies and their riders who have competed successfully at such a prestigious national competition.”

There is no entry fee to be eligible for these awards, but the pony must be registered with the WPCSA before beginning competition at Pony Finals.  At this time, fees have been reduced for registration of ponies with the WPCSA through August 31, 2012.  To see if your pony is eligible for registration, please contact the Welsh Pony & Cob Society of America 540-868-7669 or at www.welshpony.org.

Welsh Pony & Cob Society of America Welcomes First Part Bred to the Registry

on Tuesday, 10 July 2012. Posted in Other Pony

Press Release from the Welsh Pony & Cob Society of America

The Welsh Pony & Cob Society of America is pleased to welcome its first part bred Welsh Pony into its registry.  Doll House Sadie, a 16 year old chestnut pony mare, was bred and is owned by Cynthia and Jim Doll of Doll House Farm in Oakland, Maryland.  Sadie’s pedigree includes ponies that have excelled in both the breeding shed and in the show ring.  Her grandsire, Salvandi Calidog, was a purebred registered Section B stallion that stood for many years at Cynthia’s farm and sired such famous hunter ponies as Braveheart and Untouchable.  Her granddam was champion at Madison Square Garden in the pony hunters with Sandra Lobel.  Not to be outdone, Doll House Sadie has had much success in both arenas as well, with an outstanding show record from leadline through children’s hunter pony.

The WPCSA made its historic announcement earlier this year, opening up its registry to qualified part bred Welsh.  Dr. Ruth Wilburn, WPCSA President, states, “We believe that welcoming part bred Welsh into our organization will mutually benefit the Society as well as the breeders and owners of animals with part bred Welsh lineage.  Although we hope to welcome new owners and breeders, I’m delighted that the first part bred applicant is Cynthia who has been a long-standing and outstanding member of our Society.

As with all WPCSA registrations, registry fees are based on the animal’s age at the time of application.  As an introductory promotion, the fee for registering a part bred Welsh will be capped at a maximum of $125 through August 31, 2012.  As of September 1, 2012, regular registration fees will apply.  If you would like to see if your animal qualifies for part bred Welsh registration, please visit www.welshpony.org or call the WPCSA office at (540) 868-PONY (7669).

Press Release from the Welsh Pony & Cob Society of America

The Welsh Pony & Cob Society of America is pleased to announce a brand-new awards program that carries with it a title of distinction that will last a lifetime - the Welsh of the Year Award.  This exciting new program is designed to promote ownership, encourage involvement and spotlight the achievements of extraordinary Welsh breed individuals.  Nominations submitted throughout the year will culminate in the selection of the top winner by WPCSA membership to be awarded at the Society’s annual meeting in February.

Candidates for the Welsh of the Year Awards are WPCSA registered animals who have made outstanding accomplishments in the current year from a broad range of disciplines such as combined driving, competitive trail riding/driving, demonstrations/clinics/parades, dressage, endurance, eventing /combined training, open breed shows (any discipline), therapeutic riding, vaulting, Welsh shows and working western events.

Recognizing the impact of this award, Dr. Ruth Wilburn, WPCSA President, states “We believe that our breed is comprised of talented, hard-working, beautiful athletes and from those, we want our members to annually recognize one such animal that has gone above and beyond in representing the value and wonder of our breed.  We love our Welsh breeds and we encourage others to join us in exploring all the many ways they can and do excel, as recognized by the Welsh of the Year Award.”

Jackie Verkuyl of Goldhills Welsh, and program sponsor, agrees.  “Each year we watch representatives of our Welsh breed excel in a variety of ways, and we thought it fitting to recognize those extraordinary accomplishments through this interactive and meaningful award.  There’s no time like the present so keep this new program in mind as you watch our Welsh breeds perform and achieve this year.”

The Welsh of the Year Award will be initiated immediately with the announcement of the 2012 Welsh of the Year Award to be made at the WPCSA annual meeting in February 2013.

The process for selection is simple.  Qualifying animals must be nominated by November 1 on an official nomination form.  Based on current year accomplishments, a committee will then select five to seven finalists to be announced on the WPCSA website by December 15th.   WPCSA members will select the winner of the prestigious title of Welsh of the Year through online voting during January.  Announcement of the winner of the Welsh of the Year Award will be made at the WPCSA annual meeting in February, an occasion not to be missed!
